The 12th of April

The 12th of April, the 12th of April…

Isn’t somebody having his birthday today? Someone I know. Someone of a certain age.

Of course. He is one of my first musical loves. Even before Jacques Brel took over. Before I cheated him with John Lennon and the Beatles. Before my crush on Jimmy Hendrix. Before my passionate affair with Janis Joplin. Before my enduring relationship with Wolfgang A. Mozart and his pal Johann S. Bach. One of the living legends of Jazz, Herbie Hancock, is turning 68 today!

Listen. A 1963 recording of The Miles Davies Quintet with Herbie Hancock on keys:

  • Well, my childhood friend also celebrated his today. :D

  • Happy birthday! Thanks for sharing the vid, colson.
Our future Menkominfo, pak Boy Avianto, also celebrates his yesterday. He’s turning 33. One of my bestfriends will also be having a birthday bash on the 15th.

Dammit, that’s why Librans hate the month of April. Arians, the eternal enemies of Librans are truly having fun this month.

By the way, John Lennon’s on the 9th of October.

  • Colson, i thought u’d say you are having birth day. since..you are also Aries, no?
    when is your birthday?

    Happy birthday-in case i missed it :)

  • btw, a friend of mine, who reads my blog regularly thought that we are very close friends (in real life). she said, “from his comments i can see that he’s a very knowledgeable guy, the kind of guy i like”.

and when i told her who you are (i never met you, you are retired consultant married to Indonesian woman and just had granchild, plus member of amnesty international of course), she was surprised and we were laughing out loud.

she is 25 years old woman.

    Gee Colson..you are rock!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. Also on behalf of Herbie Hancock.

Just for the record: the exact year of my birth has vanished in the mist of times. But as my absolute age is 35, it means my three children are older now.

  • I’m confused; are we celebrating your birthday, or Herbie’s?

Uhm well anyways… it can’t hurt to wish happy birthday to whoever is having their birthdays this month :D

  • Colson, you are an aries? Me too!

Happy birthday to Herbie. Can’t say that I know much about him, but he sounded great and will look up more.

Also, we will always think of you as 35, so no worries there!

  • wow. has someone been 35 for the last couple of years? sounds like a manhattan-thing.

  • @ to all concerned: As a matter of fact Herbie Hancock and I have been born on the same date – in different years though.

One more thing. Getting older I – just like a lot of partners in distress – discovered that one’s mental age is not necessarily the same as one’s calender years. Year by year the gap between the two seemed to have been growing wider and wider. And then one may reach at a point from where one ages only physically, but doesn’t get older mentally anymore. Well, that absolute mental age is 35 for me…

(Some people may even have stopped mentally in their childhood, judging by their actions by the way)

  • Happy (belated) birthday to you then, colson. :D

  • @colson:

that’s so true. i’ve even imagined myself being 60 and cannot think that i’d somehow act like a typical 60 year old grandma who drives slowly and wear a lot of powder or menthol-smelling perfume.

wait. i already have. darn it. except for the mentho perfume.

the thing that scares me the most with getting older is the physical stuff – the wrinkles, the boob sag, the grey hair etc.

i wonder what i’ll do by the time i actually get there. maybe i shud just die young. yeah…

  • @marisa:Thanks. Especially because this emoticon is not a green one.
@therry: Something like ‘live fast, die young and have a good looking corpse”? Too late for me though.

  • Papa Colson!!! How insensitive of me!!!

    Happy belated Birthday!

    Much happiness…
    many more laughters…
    many more grandkids (hihi)
much love from friends and family
    and excellent health

I love your comment about 35 being your psychological age… mine stops at 29 hihi…

  • @ colson

    And your point is?

  • @Marisa: I love to present some riddles occasionally and I prefer yellow over green ( notwithstanding the fact I’m a member of the Dutch GroenLinks party) . But it’s also because green emoticons scare me.

@Sushihunt: Thank you. By the way, a note on hunting: use brutal force if necessary – bribe, intimidate, kick. trick, cheat and deceive. Because in war and love all means are allowed. Only accept unconditional and total surrender.

  • Well, why don’t you display a comment policy somewhere in your blog, that says your blog forbids the usage of green emoticons? So that bloggers like me would know how to comment on blogs without ever having to deal with some bloggers’ arrogance and fussiness over an emoticon.

    Do me a favour.
Do not even try to power play someone you’re not in power of, colson. And from what I’ve seen so far, Indonesian female boggers are your main interest, not Indonesia. So, sorry to say, green emoticons sure looks good on you.

Happy birthday with the young ladies on board, grandpa.

  • @marisa: Well, if you say green suits me, why shouldn’t I go by the advice of a good friend?

  • Colson …. HAPPY BELATED 35th BIRTHDAY!!!!

I’m a fanatic reader of yours and I consider myself lucky to know you!! Your entries are fruitful and often make me ashamed of myself .. I’m Indonesian and I know not even half of what you know about my country!!!

Soon I’ll have my 17th birthday, on the Queens Day. What I heard, those having horoscopes side by side can only be friends or foes. I hope we will stay friends forever!!

  • @santi d: You made my ego grow beyond recognition…

Anyhow: I’ve put an S on april 30th in my birthday calander!
